Declared World Cultural Heritage in 2008 by UNESCO together with Mantova, this city which was founded by Vespasiano Gonzaga Colonna and based on the human principals of an ideal city, hosts numerous buildings and churches of artistic and historical value such as the Teatro dell'antica (Ancient Theatre) and the Palazzo Ducale (Ducal Palace).

Also worth visiting is the Chiesa dell'Incoronata (Incoronata Church) which houses the mausoleum of Vespasiano Gonzaga.
